PRESS RELEASES FOR 2008 ENGLISH WINTER FAIR

Embargo: Immediate release
Date: September 8, 2008
Contact: Simon Wragg
Tel: 07976-278840

Headline: National carcass competition prize fund hits £3000 thanks to backing from leading beef processor ABP.

Beef producers could scoop up to £3000 in addition to auction revenue for the champion beef carcass at this year's inaugural English Winter Fair at Stafford (Nov 15-16) thanks to sponsorship from leading abattoir group Anglo Beef Processors (ABP).

The competition is open to any farm assured cattle subject to relevant age limits and cattle will be handled at ABP's specialist plant at Shrewsbury.

Richard Cracknell, Managing Director of ABP, says the competition will champion the growing number of beef producers providing what the market wants. “Every day in our seven UK abattoirs, ABP sees more beef cattle produced to the specification the market needs, but this percentage could be increased without very much extra effort on the farm.

“One way of achieving this is for farmers to see what is being produced by the top percentile of commercial beef producers at the Winter Fair which we are delighted to be supporting.

“Beef is becoming ever more expensive for the consumer and we need to ensure that the eating experience matches their expectations.”

The competition offers producers a win-win opportunity, suggests Richard Williams, chief executive of the Staffordshire & Birmingham Agricultural Society - organisers of the English Winter Fair.  "ABP's backing means the £3000 prize fund gives this competition the potential to be the most prestigious in the winter show calendar.

"Producers have everything to gain. For an entry fee of just £15* and delivering an animal to ABP the financial reward and kudos of taking the top title recognises producers' committed to delivering quality cattle for the prime year-end market."

In addition to an initial class prize of £200, leading beef processor ABP is awarding £1500 to the overall carcass champion and a further £1000 if the animal is home-bred. A final award - bring the champion's total fund up to a potential £3000 - sees £300 offered from breed societies if the champion carcass is sired by a registered pedigree British Blue, Charolais or Limousin bull.

Entries for this prestigious competition, that ABP hopes may attract up to 300 carcasses, must be received by Kate Tomlinson, English Winter Fair show secretary, by Oct 15, 2008 (tel: 01283-820012). Live cattle must be delivered to ABP Shrewsbury during the afternoon of Wednesday November 12 or between 7-10am on Thursday November 13, 2008.

The Herculean task of judging carcasses dressed to EU specification has been handed to Ashbourne, Derbyshire-based butcher Nigel Brown: "It's a great honour to be asked having been a town butcher for 35 years and having my own shop for the past 27 years.

"I like to source off local farms where possible and look for cattle of a handy size, not heavy boned and not too much fat cover. Quality, for me, is the key component whether supplying the individual consumer coming in to the shop or the restaurants and pubs in the local area," he says.

All first to third placed carcasses from each class and the champions will be moved to the English Winter Fair's purpose built, permanent, on-site Carcass Hall at Stafford County Showground for the event on the weekend of November 15-16, 2008.

All prize winning entries will be offered for sale by Bagshaw auctioneers on Sunday November 16 adding to producers' returns, explains Mr Williams.
"In addition to the prize fund ABP has undertaken to purchase all the non-prize carcasses giving all producers who enter the competition a guaranteed return," adds Mr Williams.

Payment for non-prize winning carcasses will be based on the MLC-published minimum deadweight price for EU grade R4L cattle for the week prior to slaughter (Nov 12-13).

The English Winter Fair superseded the National Primestock Show & Sale (Birmingham Fatstock) held at Stafford County Showground in 2007. This year's inaugural event follows the cancellation of the show last November due to Blue Tongue restrictions imposed by Defra.

Headline: Roll call for county YFC clubs for EBLEX-backed livestock competitions

A prize fund topping £600 is on offer in the Young Farmers' Stock-judging Competitions at this year's inaugural English Winter Fair, Stafford, thanks to backing by the English Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX) – but entries close on September 30.

That means county teams of 12 members have just two weeks to register their entry with organiser Julia Taylor, Staffordshire YFC's honorary secretary, to be in with a chance of taking home some of the £640 cash prizes on offer.

The new show – that takes place on the weekend on November 15-16 - sees exciting changes to competitive classes that take place on Sunday 16th, explains Mrs Taylor. “For the first time Young Farmers will be able to judge all three classes of livestock – beef, pigs and sheep – in both the live ring and in the purpose-built Carcass Hall thanks to support from EBLEX and the show organiser, the Staffordshire & Birmingham Agricultural Society.”

Young Farmers will pit the skills picked up in county rounds of the YFC's Stock-judging competitions against others in this nationwide event to secure prizes. “It is a great way for members to test their skill at judging stock on the hoof and on the hook. Each team is given 10 minutes to assess stock and then two minutes to give reasons to the panel of judges for their choices. It promises to be a lot of fun,” adds Mrs Taylor. In addition to cash prizes YFC teams will also compete for the Birmingham Agricultural Exhibition Society silver cup for the team accumulating most points; the Bob Williams trophy for the highest placing in judging animals on the hoof; and Mark Madders trophy for judging animals on the hook.

Young Farmers attending the event will also be able to see the Show's championships take place in the main arena in Bingley Hall as well as witness the spectacle of the grand auction of prize-winning animals from both the live arena and Carcass Hall on Sunday afternoon.

“It will make a really busy and exciting day out. Plans are now well under way and we look forward to welcoming as many county teams as possible to this year's competition. Members are asked to register with me at the Staffordshire YFC office (tel: 01785-248645) by September 30th to secure their places, adds Mrs Taylor.

Show Entries
Farmers hoping to enter competitive classes for livestock, poultry or produce at this year's inaugural English Winter Fair, Stafford, on the weekend of November 15-16, have until October 15 to register entries with the organisers.

Show secretary Kate Tomlinson says the event's post bag has been filling up steadily with entries for competitive classes but a timely reminder often sees a flurry or late applications by post. "The deadline for entries of October 15 is rapidly approaching for those farmers wanting to enter the main livestock competitions this year.

"With up to £3000 on offer for the champion carcass thanks to beef processor Anglo Beef Processors and £1000 sponsorship for the show champion from the live cattle classes thanks to feed supplement supplier ZINTEC there's a lot at stake for entrants," she explains.

Entries can be made by contacting Kate Tomlinson on 01283-820012 or by logging on to the English Winter Fair webpage at www.staffscountyshowground.co.uk and clicking on the EWF button on the main menu.

 Cattle Handling Equipment
Housing and handling of livestock during the autumn and winter months can increase the risk of injury to producers and this year's English Winter Fair, Stafford, on the weekend of November 15-16, aims to address this key issue.

Static demonstrations of the latest livestock handling equipment from the UK's leading manufacturers will be on display in a dedicated demonstration area at the event thanks to a new initiative by organiser the Staffordshire & Birmingham Agricultural Society (SBAS).

The aim is to help increase awareness of the risks posed during routine handling of livestock, explains Richard Williams, SBAS chief executive. "Members of the committee believe it is a key area of concern and we are delighted that so many manufacturers have responded to the invitation to exhibit at this year's show.

"Safe handling of stock has been highlighted in the English Beef & Lamb Executive's Better Returns Programme nation-wide and we are proud to be continuing that theme at this year's event," says Mr Williams.

EBLEX staff will be on hand along with manufacturers to talk through issues with producers as many livestock are housed on farm for the winter months.

 Products Competition
The hunt is on for the best local producers of sausage, pies, bacon and gammon at this year's English Winter Fair, Stafford, on the weekend of November 15-16 thanks to sponsorship from the British Pig Executive.

Retail butchers and those running rural or farm shops who produce their own products on-site will have the chance to compete for a coveted BPEX Gold, Silver or Bronze award for each category helping champion locally made goods ahead of the hectic year-end sales period.

The competition, that continues BPEX's tradition for hunting out and highlighting the best regional pork-based products through its nation-wide competitions, offers producers eight categories from traditional pork sausage, best beef/lamb sausage, traditional pork pie, speciality hot and/or cold eating pies, best home cured bacon and home-cured gammon.

Entries must be lodged with the English Winter Fair's show secretary, Kate Tomlinson, by November 1, 2008, by calling 01283-820012 or logging on to www.staffscountyshowground.co.uk and clicking on the EWF button on the main menu.
